Hackers made off with over $1.4 billion worth of Ethereum (ETH) and related tokens, marking the largest single theft in crypto history. The incident, confirmed by Bybit co-founder and CEO Ben Zhou, has sent shockwaves through the market, reigniting debates about the security of centralized exchanges and the vulnerabilities inherent in the crypto ecosystem.

How the Hack Unfolded

The breach targeted Bybit’s Ethereum cold wallet, a supposedly secure offline storage system designed to protect funds from online threats. According to Zhou, the attack occurred during a routine transfer between the exchange’s hot wallet (used for day-to-day transactions) and its cold wallet. What seemed like a standard operation turned into a sophisticated heist when hackers exploited a deceptive transaction process.

The attackers employed a technique known as UI (user interface) spoofing, masking a malicious transaction to trick Bybit’s multisignature (multisig) wallet signers. The team believed they were authorizing a legitimate transfer to a warm wallet—an online staging area—but instead, the signing process altered the underlying smart contract logic. This gave the hackers full control of the cold wallet, allowing them to drain approximately 401,346 ETH, along with other assets like liquid-staked Ether (stETH) and Mantle Staked ETH (mETH). At current market prices, the total value stolen exceeds $1.4 billion.

Blockchain security analyst ZachXBT was among the first to spot the suspicious outflows, flagging transactions totaling $1.46 billion on Telegram. The stolen funds were quickly split across 53 newly created wallet addresses, with some transfers involving chunks of 10,000 ETH (roughly $27 million each). The hacker then used decentralized exchanges like Uniswap and KyberSwap to swap stETH and mETH for ETH, attempting to obscure the trail.

Bybit’s Response: Solvency Assured, Withdrawals Continue

Despite the staggering loss, Bybit has moved swiftly to reassure its users. In a livestream on X, Zhou emphasized that only the Ethereum cold wallet was compromised, leaving all other cold and hot wallets intact. “Bybit is solvent even if this hack loss is not recovered,” he stated, adding that the exchange’s client assets are backed 1:1 and that its $16.2 billion in reserves can cover the shortfall. Operations, including withdrawals, have continued without interruption, though ETH withdrawals are temporarily supported by a bridge loan from partners.

The exchange reported a surge in withdrawal requests—nearly 100 times normal levels—following the news, with 70% processed by midday on February 22. Zhou acknowledged a backlog in customer support but assured users that staff were working around the clock to clear it. Bybit has also partnered with blockchain forensic teams, including Safe’s security unit and firms like SlowMist, to investigate the breach. Early speculation points to similarities with previous attacks linked to North Korean hackers, though no definitive culprit has been identified.

Market Impact and Industry Fallout

The hack triggered immediate volatility in the crypto market. Ether’s price dropped over 3% as news broke, falling below $2,700, while Bitcoin slipped from near $100,000 to $97,000. Ethereum futures traders bore the brunt, with $76 million in liquidations over four hours, including $43 million from short positions, according to CoinGlass data. The sheer scale of the theft—representing over 60% of all crypto funds stolen in 2024—underscored the growing threat of cyberattacks as digital asset prices rise.

This isn’t the first major hack of 2025. Earlier incidents, like the $9.5 million exploit of Starknet’s ZkLend and the $2.5 million breach of Arbitrum-based Moby, signaled a troubling trend. However, Bybit’s loss dwarfs these, surpassing even historic heists like the $625 million Ronin Network exploit in 2022 and the $611 million Poly Network breach in 2021. With 2024 already seeing $2.2 billion stolen across 303 incidents (per Chainalysis), the Bybit hack pushes this year’s total well beyond $3.6 billion.

The Hunt for the Hacker

The stolen ETH, now held across 53 tracked wallets, presents a challenge for the perpetrator. Moving or liquidating such a massive haul—over 500,000 ETH, more than Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin’s holdings—is no easy feat in a bearish market under intense scrutiny. Blockchain intelligence firm Arkham has launched a bounty, offering 50,000 ARKM tokens for information leading to the hacker’s identification, while the crypto community watches Etherscan’s flagged “Bybit exploiter” addresses in real time.

Security experts warn that the attack vector—manipulating multisig processes via UI spoofing—remains a persistent threat. Taylor Monahan of MetaMask told DL News, “No one is prepared for this attack vector. This will happen again and again.” Similar tactics were used in breaches like WazirX ($235 million) and DMM Bitcoin ($308 million) in 2024, highlighting the need for stronger safeguards.

What’s Next for Bybit and Crypto Security?

Bybit’s transparency and financial resilience have mitigated some panic, but trust in centralized exchanges has taken a hit. Zhou hinted at two possible causes under investigation: either all signers’ computers were compromised with a faked Safe website, or the Safe multisig platform itself was breached. Safe has paused certain functions as a precaution, though no evidence points to a flaw in its official frontend.

For now, Bybit is leaning on its $20 billion in assets under management to weather the storm. The exchange’s proof-of-reserves system, showing robust backing before the hack, offers some reassurance. However, the incident has intensified calls for decentralized alternatives and better private key management—key vulnerabilities in centralized platforms.

As the crypto industry reels from this historic breach, traders are urged to stay vigilant. The Bybit hack is a stark reminder that even the most secure systems can fall to sophisticated attacks, and with cybercriminals growing bolder, the stakes have never been higher.

From artificial intelligence crafting new DNA sequences to ancient genomes revealing humanity’s past, the latest news in genomics highlights a dynamic interplay of science, technology, and history. Here’s a dive into the most recent developments that are pushing the boundaries of what we believe is possible.

AI Takes the Helm: Writing Genomes from Scratch

One of the most startling advancements comes from the integration of artificial intelligence into genomic research. On February 19, 2025, Nature reported a leap forward: an AI network, trained on a vast repository of sequence data, is now capable of designing entirely new genomes. This isn’t just about tweaking existing DNA; it’s about creating novel genetic codes that could one day lead to synthetic organisms tailored for specific purposes, such as producing new medicines or biofuels. The implications are profound, raising both excitement and ethical questions about the power to author life itself. Posts on X echo this sentiment, with users marveling at how "AI is now writing genomes," signaling the dawn of a new era in synthetic biology.

This development builds on decades of genomic progress, from the Human Genome Project to CRISPR gene editing, but it accelerates the pace dramatically. Scientists see this as a step toward precision biology, where genomes can be engineered with unprecedented control. However, the technology’s infancy means its practical applications remain speculative. Will it revolutionize medicine, or will it stumble over unforeseen complexities? The jury is still out, but the potential is undeniable.

Ancient DNA Rewrites Human History

While the future of genomics dazzles with AI, the past is being illuminated by ancient DNA. In December 2024, The New York Times and Nature reported on the sequencing of the oldest human genomes yet, from fossils dating back 45,000 years in Europe. These genomes, extracted from bones in Germany and the Czech Republic, reveal that early modern humans were part of a surprisingly recent migration out of Africa, with common ancestors of non-Africans living around 47,000 years ago. This challenges earlier assumptions about the timing and spread of human populations.

Even more intriguing, the data shows interbreeding with Neanderthals, with about 2–3% of their DNA lingering in non-African genomes today. New Scientist noted that these ancient genomes pinpoint when and how this mingling occurred, offering a clearer picture of our hybrid heritage. Meanwhile, a separate study from Nature earlier in January 2024 analyzed 100 genomes from Neolithic Denmark, uncovering two major population turnovers within a mere 1,000 years, evidence of dramatic shifts in genes, diets, and even landscapes. These findings underscore how dynamic human history has been, driven by migration, adaptation, and survival.

Genomic Diversity and Modern Health

Closer to the present, efforts to map genetic diversity are yielding insights into health and ancestry. A January 15, 2025, article from ABC News highlighted a global study identifying hundreds of new genetic variants linked to depression. Drawing from 29 countries, with a quarter of participants from non-European backgrounds, this research deepens our understanding of depression’s hereditary roots and hints at potential gene-based treatments. The possibility of repurposing existing drugs based on these findings has researchers particularly excited, offering hope for more effective therapies.

On another front, posts on X have spotlighted a study connecting the Harappan genome (from the ancient Indus Valley Civilization) to modern South Asians, suggesting genetic continuity rather than replacement. This reinforces the idea that India’s population has deep, unbroken roots, challenging narratives of large-scale migrations overwriting local genetics. Such studies not only refine our historical narrative but also inform personalized medicine by identifying genetic variants unique to specific populations.

Speeding Up Diagnosis with Whole Genome Sequencing

In the realm of clinical applications, GeneDx announced on February 13, 2025, via Life Science Report, the launch of ultraRapid Whole Genome Sequencing. This technology delivers actionable results in as little as 48 hours for critically ill patients in neonatal and pediatric intensive care units. By decoding an entire genome at lightning speed, doctors can pinpoint genetic conditions swiftly, potentially saving lives where every moment counts. This innovation exemplifies how genomic tools are transitioning from research labs to hospital bedsides, making science a tangible ally in healthcare.

The Unseen World of Tiny Proteins

Finally, Nature reported on February 11, 2025, about a hidden layer of the human genome: thousands of tiny proteins previously overlooked. These microproteins, encoded in what was once dismissed as "junk DNA," are now under scrutiny to uncover their roles. Could they influence disease, development, or cellular function? The search is on, and early speculation suggests they might hold keys to understanding complex biological processes that larger proteins can’t explain alone.

Looking Ahead

The latest news in genomics paints a picture of a field in flux, bridging past, present, and future. AI-driven synthetic biology promises to redefine creation, while ancient DNA rewrites our origins. Meanwhile, modern applications are enhancing health outcomes and uncovering genetic diversity with global implications. Yet, as these tools grow more powerful, so do the questions they raise: How will we wield the ability to design life? What does our genetic past teach us about our future? For now, the genomic frontier remains a thrilling, uncharted expanse, with each discovery lighting the way forward.

This faceless, anatomically accurate synthetic human has captured the imagination, and perhaps the unease of tech enthusiasts worldwide. With over 200 degrees of freedom, more than 1,000 Myofibers, and 500 sensors, Protoclone represents a leap forward in the quest to create machines that mirror human capabilities. But what exactly is Protoclone, and what does it mean for the future? Let’s dive into the details.

What Is Protoclone?

Protoclone V1 is the brainchild of Clone Robotics, a startup operating out of the United States and Poland. According to a report from DeepNewz published on February 20, 2025, this android is designed to replicate human anatomy with startling precision. Unlike traditional robots with rigid joints and mechanical actuators, Protoclone uses Myofibers synthetic muscle-like structures, giving it a flexibility and range of motion that rivals the human body. Its 200+ degrees of freedom allow it to move in ways that conventional robots can’t, while 500 embedded sensors provide real-time feedback, enabling dynamic interaction with its environment.

A 40-second video shared by Clone co-founder Dhanush Radhakrishna on X showcased Protoclone in action. Suspended in a workshop, the android performed eerie, fluid movements, its black reflective mask obscuring any semblance of a face. Posted in mid-January 2025, the clip went viral, amassing millions of views within hours, according to Mike Kalil. Radhakrishna called it “ground zero for the age of androids,” a bold claim that’s sparked both excitement and trepidation.

The Tech Behind the Terror

Protoclone’s specs are impressive. The 1,000+ Myofibers mimic biological muscles, allowing for smooth, organic motion rather than the jerky, mechanical steps of earlier robots. Its 200 degrees of freedom refer to the number of independent movements it can make; far exceeding the human body’s roughly 244 degrees, though constrained differently due to its synthetic nature. The 500 sensors, likely including pressure, motion, and proximity detectors, give Protoclone a heightened awareness of its surroundings, a feature that could make it adaptable to complex tasks.

Posts on X from users like @thehiddenmaze and @BeginnersinAI echo these details, emphasizing the android’s potential to integrate advanced AI and robotics. While Clone Robotics hasn’t fully disclosed the AI powering Protoclone, the company’s ambition is clear: to create synthetic humans capable of long-term, independent operation in real-world settings.

A Creepy Milestone or a Cool Breakthrough?

Reactions to Protoclone are mixed. Dar Sleeper, head of growth at 1X Technologies (an OpenAI-backed robotics firm), told Mike Kalil that the design is both “cooler” and “creepier” than anything he’s seen. Social media sentiments on X range from awe to outright horror. @TheProjectUnity quipped that Protoclone “will now haunt your dreams,” while @scottjla joked it’s putting “horror movie monsters out of work.” The faceless design, coupled with its lifelike movements, undeniably evokes a sense of the uncanny valley—a psychological response where something almost human feels deeply unsettling.

Yet, beyond the creep factor, Protoclone’s unveiling has serious implications. Pravda EN described it as a “significant advancement in robotics,” suggesting applications in fields like healthcare, manufacturing, or even space exploration, where human-like dexterity and resilience are prized. Clone Robotics has hinted at releasing 279 “Alpha” units later in 2025, priced in the “supercar range,” according to The Trek BBS. These limited-edition models could serve as a testing ground for broader commercial rollout.

The Bigger Picture

Protoclone isn’t just a tech demo, it’s a statement. Clone Robotics aims to push the boundaries of what synthetic humans can achieve, potentially rivaling efforts like Tesla’s Optimus bot. While Tesla focuses on sleek, utilitarian humanoid robots, Protoclone’s musculoskeletal approach prioritizes biological mimicry, offering a different path toward autonomy and functionality.

Still, questions linger. How practical is Protoclone outside controlled environments? Can its Myofibers withstand prolonged use? And what ethical concerns arise as we inch closer to machines that blur the line between human and artificial? For now, Clone Robotics has given us a glimpse of a future that’s equal parts thrilling and unnerving.

Final Thoughts

Protoclone V1 is more than a robot, it’s a milestone in humanity’s quest to replicate itself in silicon and synthetic fiber. Whether it’s a harbinger of a robotic revolution or a curious experiment destined for niche applications, one thing is certain: it’s got people talking. As we await more details from Clone Robotics, Protoclone stands as a testament to how far we’ve come and a reminder of how much further we might go.

This leap forward is not only a testament to the practical application of quantum mechanics but also a significant step towards scaling quantum computing to new heights.

What is Quantum Teleportation?

Quantum teleportation is a technique of transferring quantum information from one location to another without moving the physical quantum state itself. It leverages quantum entanglement, a phenomenon where two particles become interconnected so that the state of one (no matter the distance) instantly influences the other. Unlike traditional teleportation scenarios portrayed in science fiction, quantum teleportation does not involve moving matter but rather the transfer of quantum states.

The Breakthrough

According to recent reports, the Oxford team demonstrated the first instance of teleporting logical quantum gates, which are the basic building blocks of quantum algorithms, across a network link. This is distinct from previous achievements where quantum states were transferred. By using a photonic network interface, the researchers linked two separate quantum processors to function as a single, fully connected quantum computer.

The significance of this achievement lies in its potential to solve the scalability problem in quantum computing. Traditional methods involve packing more qubits into one device, which is challenging due to quantum decoherence. The Oxford approach, however, allows for distributed quantum computing, where smaller quantum devices can be interconnected, thus maintaining quantum coherence across a network while still achieving large-scale computation.

Implications for Quantum Computing

This breakthrough could pave the way for what's been termed a 'quantum internet'—a network where quantum processors could communicate securely, perform computations, and engage in sensing across vast distances with unprecedented security due to the principles of quantum mechanics.

The researchers, including Dougal Main from Oxford's Department of Physics, highlighted that this method could lead to quantum computers performing tasks beyond the capabilities of today's classical supercomputers. For instance, they successfully executed Grover's search algorithm, demonstrating how quantum teleportation can enhance computational speed for searching unstructured databases.

Future Prospects

Professor David Lucas, another key figure in this research, noted that while the current technology proves the concept, scaling up quantum computers would still require significant physics insights and engineering efforts. Nevertheless, this development marks a milestone in making quantum computing more feasible for practical, large-scale use.

Conclusion

The Oxford scientists' achievement in quantum teleportation using a quantum supercomputer is a landmark in the journey towards realizing quantum computing's full potential. While there are still hurdles to overcome, this breakthrough underscores the exciting possibilities of quantum technology, from ultra-secure communications to solving complex computational problems in fields like cryptography, drug discovery, and climate modeling. As we delve deeper into the quantum realm, the future of computing looks increasingly bound by the laws of quantum physics rather than traditional binary logic.

The findings were published in the journal Nature, indicating the rigorous peer review and scientific validation this work has undergone. As we move forward, it will be intriguing to see how this technology evolves and integrates into our digital lives.

But there’s a deeper layer to this mystery that lingers in the cryptoverse: Was Hal Finney the secretive Satoshi Nakamoto who developed Bitcoin?

Let’s rewind a bit

An active participant in the early 90s cypherpunk movement would have formed an interesting picture. At the time Hal Finney brought together the internet's smartest thinkers to work on developing groundbreaking tools which revolutionized the way society explores money movements and data safety concepts. Bitcoin did not start as a widely known entity when Hal Finney started investigating future topics in digital currency and cryptographic solutions.

The Anonymous Trader and Digital Proofs of Work In 2004

Hal introduced the world to a concept that would echo through the corridors of cryptography for years to come: Reusable Proof of Work (RPOW). Financial scholars credit those proof-of-work systems initiated during this time as essential for establishing Bitcoin's underlying core components. The process created solutions to puzzles but also built a decentralized automatic system for digital transaction validation that stood as the foundation for Bitcoin.

The First Bitcoin Transaction

From this point onwards we see exciting developments which will shape the future of Bitcoin. The Bitcoin pioneer Hal Finney got the inaugural Bitcoin payment directly from the system's creator Satoshi Nakamoto. The historic nature of Hal receiving Bitcoin from Satoshi Nakamoto has sparked many observers to hypothesize about his identity beyond basic adopter status. Was he the person who used the Satoshi pseudonym to distribute Bitcoin transactions?

Today no definitive evidence exists

But the accumulated indications strongly support the existence of Satoshi Nakamoto. Hal remained established as one of Bitcoin's pioneer adopters because he quickly understood its transformative power while helping design its operational framework.

Satoshi exchanged routine communications with Hal who provided direction concerning programming code and assisted with Bitcoin protocol development.

A Vision of Privacy and Empowerment

The code implementation aims symbolically reflected the core meaning of Bitcoin but it wasn't the sole focus. Through his worldview regarding privacy while advocating decentralization alongside personal control of finances he brought to life Bitcoin's core nature. As he famously said in a 1992 email to the Cypherpunks mailing list:

"The computer can be used as a tool to liberate and protect people, rather than to control them.“

This was the heart of Hal’s mission: The purpose behind his work extended beyond technology advancement because he wanted to make sure people could gain power. Finney created foundational work which will guide future privacy systems operated by individual users instead of government or corporate entities.

The Conspiracy Deepens

Now, fast forward to the speculation about Satoshi Nakamoto. The creator of Bitcoin might seem to coincide with the person who accepted its initial transaction. Multiple key elements including technical capabilities personal beliefs as well as chronological facts together confirm that Hal may be the right person. Similar to timeless mysteries the real answer tends to evade human understanding.

By eternity carving Hal Finney's name into Bitcoin history books all took place. Through his work he played an active role in creating rather than observing the development of this groundbreaking software. Were his leadership skills strong enough to merit him as Bitcoin's real founder? It’s a question that still baffles the cryptosphere, but one thing is certain: No matter who holds the Satoshi identity Bitcoin's history forever connects to Finney's legacy.

Stay tuned for the next part of the series where we’ll delve even deeper into Hal Finney’s later contributions to Bitcoin and the cryptographic community. Keep your curiosity piqued, this story is far from over!

If you're a fan of games like Pokemon or Neopets, you'll love the concept behind Axie Infinity.

But what sets Axie Infinity apart from other collectible games is that it's built on the Ethereum blockchain. This means that each Axie is a unique, non-fungible token (NFT) that you own and control. You can buy, sell, or trade Axies just like you would with any other cryptocurrency, and their value is determined by the market.

So, what's the appeal of collecting and battling Axies? For one, they're just really cute. Each Axie has its own unique appearance, abilities, and personality, making them highly sought-after by collectors. But beyond their cute factor, Axies also have real value. As the Axie Infinity ecosystem grows, so does the value of rare Axies.

But Axie Infinity is more than just a collectible game. It's also a platform for players to build and share their own game worlds, called "Lands." These Lands are created using Axie Infinity's proprietary NFT platform, called "Axie Infinity Land," which allows players to design their own interactive environments and experiences.

Players can earn rewards for participating in the Axie Infinity ecosystem by breeding Axies, playing games on Lands, and more. And with the Axie Infinity Marketplace, players can buy and sell in-game items and resources, as well as Axies, using the game's native cryptocurrency, called SLP.

It allows users to create, experience, and monetize content and applications in a virtual world. The Decentraland Metaverse is a shared virtual space where users can interact with each other and with virtual objects and experiences.

One of the main advantages of the Decentraland Metaverse is that it is decentralized and owned by its users. This means that users have control over their virtual land and the content they create within it, rather than being subject to the rules and policies of a central authority. This allows for greater creativity and freedom within the virtual world.

Another advantage of the Decentraland Metaverse is that it is built on the Ethereum blockchain, which provides a secure and transparent platform for conducting transactions and exchanging value. This means that users can buy and sell virtual land and assets within the Decentraland Metaverse using the cryptocurrency Ethereum.

One potential disadvantage of the Decentraland Metaverse is that it is still a relatively new and experimental platform, and as such it may not yet have all the features and functionality that users might expect from a more established virtual world. Additionally, the Decentraland Metaverse is dependent on the Ethereum blockchain, which can be prone to scalability issues and high transaction fees.

Despite these potential disadvantages, the Decentraland Metaverse offers many benefits to its users. It allows for a level of creativity and freedom that is not possible in the physical world, and it provides a platform for users to monetize their creations and skills. The Decentraland Metaverse also has the potential to be a powerful tool for education, training, and remote collaboration.

Decentraland has a native cryptocurrency called MANA, which is used as the primary means of exchange within the Decentraland Metaverse. MANA can be used to purchase virtual land, assets, and services within the Decentraland Metaverse. It can also be traded on cryptocurrency exchanges for other cryptocurrencies or fiat currencies.

The value of MANA is determined by supply and demand, and it is subject to fluctuations in the cryptocurrency market. As the Decentraland Metaverse grows and becomes more popular, the demand for MANA may increase, potentially leading to an appreciation in its value.

In addition to being used as a means of exchange, MANA also plays a role in the governance of the Decentraland Metaverse. Users who hold large amounts of MANA are able to participate in the decision-making process for the platform by voting on proposals and updates to the Decentraland Metaverse. This allows the community to have a say in the direction and development of the platform.

Overall, the use of MANA as the native cryptocurrency of the Decentraland Metaverse adds an additional layer of functionality and value to the platform. It allows for seamless transactions and exchanges within the virtual world, and it gives users a stake in the governance and development of the platform.

In conclusion, the Decentraland Metaverse is a promising and innovative virtual reality platform that offers many advantages and benefits to its users. While it is still in its early stages and may have some limitations, it has the potential to revolutionize the way we interact and create within virtual worlds.

One notable example of this is the development of chat GPT, or chat-based generative pre-trained transformer models.

Chat GPT is a type of AI model that uses large amounts of text data to learn how to generate human-like responses in a conversation. The model is "pre-trained" on a massive dataset of text, allowing it to understand the nuances and complexities of natural language. When given a prompt, the model can then generate a response that is appropriate and coherent in the context of the conversation.

One of the key advantages of chat GPT is its ability to handle long-form conversations. Unlike other natural language processing models that are designed to handle a specific task, such as translating text or answering a question, chat GPT can sustain a conversation for extended periods of time. This makes it an attractive tool for a wide range of applications, such as customer service, virtual assistants, and social media bots.

Another advantage of chat GPT is its ability to adapt to different domains and styles. Because it is trained on a large and diverse dataset, the model can generate responses that are appropriate for a variety of contexts and topics. This allows it to engage in conversation with users on a wide range of subjects, from general chit-chat to specialized topics.

In addition to its conversational abilities, chat GPT also has the ability to generate text that is human-like in style and content. This means that the model can produce responses that are coherent, engaging, and even creative. This makes it a valuable tool for generating content, such as articles, stories, and even poems.

Chat GPT can give human readable answers to any type of queries. I’m asking it to write NFT minting smart-contract in Ethereum blockchain.

Despite its impressive capabilities, chat GPT is not without its limitations. Like all machine learning models, it is only as good as the data it is trained on. This means that the model may produce biased or inappropriate responses if the training data contains such examples. Additionally, the model can only generate responses based on the information it has seen in the training data, so it may not be able to handle novel or unexpected situations.

Overall, chat GPT is a powerful and versatile tool that has the potential to revolutionize the field of natural language processing. With its ability to handle long-form conversations and generate human-like text, it has a wide range of applications and can be a valuable asset for businesses, researchers, and consumers alike.

Is it available to test?

Yes, but it is currently on the research preview phase, usage of ChatGPT is free. Try it now at chat.openai.com.

was a famous cryptographer, programmer, and bitcoin pioneer who received his first bitcoin transaction from Satoshi Nakamoto. He died in 2014 at the age of 58 after battling ALS for five years and paying donors to freeze his body.

The identity of Bitcoin’s pseudonymous founder is the subject of endless and dedicated speculation among the hardcore crypto crowd, and for good reason: this mystery is truly impressive. While there are plenty of candidates to quote, there is something special about passionate runner, cyberpunk, and early Bitcoin contributor Harold Thomas Finney II, better known as Hal, that makes people believe he is the right person. But let alone all dreams, dealing with reality is revealing.

California Institute of Technology and Crypto Beginnings

Finney graduated from Caltech in 1979 as an engineer. After several years developing computer games, he moved to PGP where he created some of the "pretty good privacy" the world has ever seen. Finney was a member of OG cypherpunk, a mailing list member in the early 1990s, and an avid developer and philosopher of cryptographic solutions for privacy, anonymity, and financial independence.

One of his most recent accomplishments at Bitcoin was the creation of the first known anonymous trader and digital reusable proofs of work (RPOW) system in 2004. He was also known for receiving his first Bitcoin transaction directly from Satoshi. These basic facts are impressive enough, but they will take a closer look at some of the accidents and things that can tell whether something like Hal as Nakamoto. First, a quote from Finney via email from Cypherpunks in 1992:

" Here we are faced with the problems of loss of privacy, creeping computerization, massive databases, more centralization – and Chaum offers a completely different direction to go in, one which puts power into the hands of individuals rather than governments and corporations. The computer can be used as a tool to liberate and protect people, rather than to control them. "
